LASIK vs. PRK: Which Laser Eye Surgery Fits Your Lifestyle?
Imagine waking up every morning with clear vision, completely free from the hassle of glasses or contact lenses. If you're ready to explore permanent vision correction, laser eye surgery can help you achieve that freedom.
At Maryland Eye Care Center, with convenient locations in Silver Spring and Hyattsville, Maryland, Dr. Saman Ghahremani and our experienced team help patients find the perfect path to clear sight.
We offer comprehensive evaluations to determine if LASIK or PRK is the best fit for your eyes and your daily routine.
What’s the difference between LASIK and PRK?
Both procedures are highly effective outpatient surgeries that permanently reshape your cornea, which is the clear front surface of your eye, to correct refractive errors. They use similar laser technology to improve vision, but they differ in how they access the treatment area.
During a LASIK procedure, a surgeon creates a thin flap on the corneal surface, folds it back, reshapes the underlying tissue, and then replaces the flap.
In contrast, PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is a flap-free procedure. Your surgeon gently removes the entire outer layer of the cornea before reshaping, and it naturally grows back over a few days.
Which laser eye surgery fits your lifestyle?
Choosing between these two options depends heavily on your daily activities, your hobbies, and your physical anatomy. PRK is often the safer and more stable alternative for individuals who participate in high-impact contact sports or have naturally thin corneas.
If you have an active lifestyle, work in a physically demanding profession such as law enforcement, or enjoy martial arts, PRK eliminates the risk of future flap displacement. However, if you want a faster recovery with minimal downtime, LASIK might be your choice.
Debunking recovery myths
Many people hesitate to seek treatment because they worry about pain or a long recovery, but such worries are largely unfounded. Laser eye surgery is virtually painless due to numbing drops, and most LASIK patients safely resume normal activities within 24-48 hours.
PRK recovery takes a bit longer, usually requiring a few days of rest while the outer corneal layer heals. Still, both options deliver outstanding long-term results.
To ensure your eyes are ready for permanent reshaping, candidates must have a stable eye prescription for at least one year.
Your eyes are unique, and your vision correction plan should be too. Our team at Maryland Eye Care Center is here to guide you through every step of the decision-making process. To find out which procedure is right for you, schedule an appointment with our specialists today.
