How Comprehensive Eye Exams Detect Silent Conditions Like Glaucoma Early

Many eye conditions develop slowly without warning signs. At Maryland Eye Care Center in Hyattsville and Silver Spring, Maryland, our team of experienced ophthalmologists and optometrists helps protect your sight.

A routine vision check isn’t enough to spot hidden diseases. You need a comprehensive eye exam that evaluates your overall ocular health.

That’s especially true for silent conditions like glaucoma. Glaucoma is often called the sneak thief of sight. It can damage your eyes long before you notice a change in your vision.

Why is glaucoma called a silent disease?

Glaucoma progresses without symptoms because it damages your side vision first. Your brain compensates for this gradual loss, keeping your central vision clear. Patients often don’t notice vision loss until 40% of their nerve fibers are compromised. By then, the damage is permanent.

At our offices in Silver Spring and Hyattsville, we look beyond your central vision. We evaluate your entire visual field to catch these microscopic changes early.

Why is a basic eye pressure check not enough?

A simple eye pressure check can easily miss early stages of glaucoma. True detection requires advanced structural imaging of your optic nerve.

A review found that basic eye pressure checks missed over half of early glaucoma cases. In contrast, advanced laser imaging called optical coherence tomography (OCT) detected the disease with much higher accuracy. OCT maps the thickness of your retinal nerve fibers.

We use state-of-the-art OCT imaging during our exams. This technology lets us see microscopic nerve thinning before you experience any vision loss.

Who’s at risk for silent vision loss?

Anyone can develop glaucoma, but certain health and demographic factors significantly increase your risk. Knowing your risk level helps us customize your preventative care plan.

High-risk factors include older age, diabetes, and a family history of the disease. Being of Black or Latino/Hispanic ethnicity, having myopia, or having low blood pressure also increases your glaucoma risk.

During your visit, we review your complete medical history and family background. This information helps us determine how often you need to undergo glaucoma screening. If we detect early signs, we offer personalized glaucoma management to protect your sight.

Don’t wait for your vision to blur before taking action. Early detection is the only way to prevent irreversible vision loss from glaucoma. Contact our team at Maryland Eye Care Center today to schedule an appointment at one of our convenient locations.
