LtCol Derrick Montgomery, MD, MBA

LtCol Derrick Montgomery, MD, MBA originally hails from Detroit, MI He graduated from Morehouse College, Magna Cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Montgomery was deployed to the middle east during a stint in the Navy and was later commissioned into the US Air Force in 1998. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan and earned the prestigious Logan award for the highest achieving minority student in the class. After completing a residency in ophthalmology and later a corneal transplantation and LASIK surgery fellowship at USC in Los Angeles, he was stationed all over the country. He served as the Director of Ophthalmology and LASIK at each of his three duty stations: the US Air Force Academy, Wright Patterson AFB, and Andrews AFB. Along the way, he earned an MBA with an emphasis in leadership and entrepreneurship from the University of Colorado where his interests focused on developing propriety hardware to advance telemedicine.

Dr. Montgomery was deployed to Joint Base Balad, Iraq to serve in “Operation: Enduring freedom” as an ocular trauma surgeon and has trained several students and residents during his career. Dr. Montgomery’s philanthropic endeavors include mission trips to Cajamarca and Arequipa, Peru and Tegucigalpa, Honduras where he has restored sight to countless indigent patients. Having performed over 3500 cataract procedures over 5000 LASIK and refractive surgeries and several corneal transplants, his interests also extend into the performing arts. He is most proud of his performance as a singer in the Morehouse College Glee Club in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1996 Olympics alongside Tricia Yearwood, Gloria Estefan and Stevie Wonder and is himself a published composer of an arrangement of “Amazing Grace”. He will retire with 20 years of distinguished service in July and is the founder of D. Alan Medical LLC a medical consulting company.
